Gut microbiome composition predicts summer core range size in two divergent ungulates

چکیده
ABSTRACT The gut microbiome of animals vary by age, diet, and habitat, directly influences an individual's health. Similarly, variation in home ranges is linked to feeding strategies fitness. Ungulates (hooved mammals) exhibit species-specific microbiomes habitat use patterns. We combined movement data assess relationships between space the a specialist generalist ungulate. GPS radiocollared 24 mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) 34 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), collected fecal samples, conducted high-throughput sequencing 16S rRNA gene. generated diversity metrics key bacterial ratios. Our research question centred around idea that larger Firmicutes Bacteroidetes ratios confer body size or fat advantages allow for ranges, disproportionate are stronger goat. were positively correlated with core range area both species. Mountain exhibited negative relationship proportional treed areas escape terrain, no detected deer. This first study relate wild ungulates important proof concept advances information can be gleaned from non-invasive sampling.

Seasonal Variation in Human Gut Microbiome Composition
The composition of the human gut microbiome is influenced by many environmental factors. Diet is thought to be one of the most important determinants, though we have limited understanding of the extent to which dietary fluctuations alter variation in the gut microbiome between individuals. In this study, we examined variation in gut microbiome composition between winter and summer over the cour...
متن کاملRole of Gut Microbiome in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder that affects 8-13% of women at reproductive age worldwide. This disorder is usually associated with menstrual disorders, infertility, obesity, and insulin resistance. The underlying cause of this syndrome is unknown, however in recent years, researchers have shown an association between intestinal microbiota alterations )dysbiosi...
متن کاملSocial networks predict gut microbiome composition in wild baboons
Social relationships have profound effects on health in humans and other primates, but the mechanisms that explain this relationship are not well understood. Using shotgun metagenomic data from wild baboons, we found that social group membership and social network relationships predicted both the taxonomic structure of the gut microbiome and the structure of genes encoded by gut microbial speci...
متن کاملThe core gut microbiome, energy balance and obesity.
Metagenomics is an emerging field focused on characterizing the structures, functions and dynamic operations of microbial communities sampled in their native habitats without the need for culture. Here, we present findings from a 16S rRNA gene sequence- and whole community DNA shotgun sequencing-based analysis of the adult human gut microbiomes of lean and obese mono- and dizygotic twins. Our f...
متن کاملCorrelations of Host Genetics and Gut Microbiome Composition
The human gut microbiome has a considerable impact on host health. The long list of microbiome-related health disorders raises the question of what in fact determines microbiome composition. In this review we sought to understand how the host itself impacts the structure of the gut microbiota population, specifically by correlations of host genetics and gut microbiome composition. Host genetic ...
